With one of the last winter storms clearing the Central Plateau, we decided to do the 8 km hike to Tama Lakes in the beautiful Tongariro National Park. Come with us, feel the icy cold winds as we walk through snow showers. This beautiful landscape has to be seen to be believed. Fortunately for you, you won't need thermals on to join us, sit back and enjoy the hike.
A lot of photographers shoot infrared with just a 720nm filter, which gives you that classic look—the white trees, the dark skies, the surreal tonal inversions. But add a polarizing filter into the mix, and you're working with a whole different set of possibilities.
For photographers, the Cape Palliser region offers extraordinary geological diversity within a relatively small area. The pure white limestone formations provide stunning contrast against dark beach sands, deep blue seas, and often dramatic skies. The interplay between the ancient marine limestone and the active coastal environment creates ever-changing light conditions and compositional opportunities.
By now you will have seen many pictures of the eclipse and how it looked from both the earth and (for the first time ever) from the moon. In this post I want to take a slightly different approach and document how I planned the shoot, what I aimed for and how I could approach a similar event next time.
